This hidden gem offers a peaceful escape that will leave you breathless. The Sanctuary’s breathtaking Basilica, with its intimate ambiance, will serve as your rehearsal space, providing the perfect backdrop for your musical journey.
The Musical Team
At the centre of our trip to Mallorca is, of course, the singing. You will be led by our team of Jeff Stewart and Ben Saul.
Jeff trained as an opera and concert singer and continues to have an international career as a tenor soloist. He is also a renowned singing teacher, having given masterclasses as far afield as China and Macedonia, as well as being a teacher at the Royal College of Music. His roots lie in the choral repertoire in which he was brought up. It is his mission to teach people to sing in a way which fills their lives with joy. Many have described his teaching as life-changing, and he loves nothing more than to help singers to let go of their limitations and embrace being the best singer they can possibly be.
The musical programme will depend on the numbers of voice types who book but, since we will be in Spain, it would be only right to have something by Thomas LuÃs de Victoria, so his wonderful Missa Ave Maris Stella will feature. Others pieces on the shortlist are Antonio Vivaldi – Magnificat, Stanford – 3 Motets – Justorum Animae, Beati Quorum Via and Coelos Ascendit Hodie, Matthew Rogers – Breathe On Me Breath Of God, and J.A.C redford’s Let Beauty Be Our Memorial
Ben Saul is often described as a genius. Comfortable in any repertoire, he combines an inate understanding of all musical genres, with the ability to play with effortless beauty. As well as a busy teaching and playing career, Ben teaches Music Therapy at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
Both Jeff & Ben know the importance of maintaining a light-hearted, pressure free environment in which our guests can relax and truly enjoy making music. It’s not about getting it right (although we will), it’s not about being in tune (although we will be), it’s about finding what is wonderful about you as a singer and helping you to learn to celebrate that.
The Sanctuary’s Rich History
The Santuari Lluc has a fascinating history, beginning with a monk who discovered a Madonna statue in a stream. This moment led to the establishment of a monastery that has become a haven of peace and spirituality. Today, the same statue graces the altar of the Basilica, symbolizing a journey of discovery and devotion.
We will be working on a selection of pieces for a concert at the end of the week and to sing at Mass on the Sunday. The music will be sent in advance so that you have time to prepare ahead of the course if you wish.
You will be in inspiring surroundings and we will be helping you to match them with your singing.
On arrival you will be shown to your rooms which are always fresh, clean and comfortable.
Each morning we will have breakfast at the Sanctuary restaurant. We will provide buffet lunches for you on site and, on days where we are travelling, you will have the opportunity to put together a packed lunch of your choice. On the days where we have an evening meal at the Sanctuary, we will be eating at the on-site restaurant
On Monday 5th May, you will arrive at Palma airport in Mallorca, by 3:00pm. You will be picked up by coach and taken on a picturesque drive, through the mountains, to the Santuari Lluc.
On arrival we will give you time to settle into your rooms before offering you welcome drinks. After that it will be dinner in the restaurant at the Sanctuary. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere and the perfect place to unwind and get to know each other.
One of the things for which our company is renowned is the atmosphere we create, and the lasting friendships that arise from our events.
On the Tuesday morning you will have chance to have a leisurely breakfast, before we take you to the Basilica for the first of our rehearsals.
On the days where we are at the Sanctuary all day, the programme will include rehearsals at 9:30am to 11.30pm and then again from 4.30pm to 7:00pm. We will provide a buffet style lunch for you to eat wherever you like around the Sanctuary. In the afternoons there will be the opportuity to have individual voice sessions and we are negotiating for the pool to be available. Alternatively, you might just want to spend the afternoons relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere of this extraordinary place.
Dinner will be at 7:30pm each evening in the Sanctuary restaurant, and will be accompanied by local wines
On Wednesday we will leave the Sanctuary in the morning, having provided you with a packed lunch. We will then take you to the historic city of Palma where you will be dropped off near the great cathedral. There, we will provide you with entrance tickets to visit the cathedral.
Once you have had chance to take in this amazing place you are free to spend some time enjoying the sights of Palma. There is plenty to see but you may also just like to find a café and sit in the sun, watching the world go by. The choice is yours.
Next we board the famous old narrow-gauge railway, known as the Tren Soller. This takes us through the stunning scenery of the Tramuntana mountains. This is a journey you will never forget.
You will have the chance to spend a bit of time looking around the picturesque town of Soller, before boarding the tram to Port De Soller, where we will have the first of our special meals out, at the Suculenta restaurant, before being picked up by coach and returned to the Sanctuary Lluc.
Moving on to the Friday of our trip, we will work from 9.30am until 11.30am, before picking up a packed lunch and setting off by coach to Valldemossa to see the famous Carthusian Monastery where Chopin and Aurore Dudevant, alias George Sand, famously had a romantic affair.
This part of the island is considered an area of outstanding beauty.
You will be given plenty of time to look around the sights and get a feel of this lovely town and its surrounds, before being taken back to Sanctuary Lluc for another hour of singing and then dinner.
It is our intention that, on the Saturday evening of our stay, we will perform a concert of the music on which we have been working. We will also be preparing to sing at Mass in the Basilica on our final day.
Once Mass is over, we will treat you to one of the most unforgettable dining experiences of your life, at Restaurant Es Guix. Not only is the food fabulous and the view second-to-none but, once lunch is over, you will be able to spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the incomparably fresh water of the natural swimming pool in the gardens. For many this will be an absolute highlight of the whole trip.
Once we are back we will all meet in the grounds of the Sanctuary for farewell drinks and nibbles. It’s the perfect way to round off a unique and wonderful week, chatting and laughing together in the warmth of the Mallorcan evening.
Then on Monday 12th May you will be picked up and taken back to Palma airport, where we will say a final farewell and depart for our homes, refreshed, invigorated and inspired.
The Santuari Lluc lives up to its name. It is a true sanctuary from the rest of the world. A place of peace, calm, tranquility and beauty. This is a trip you will never forget and it is our hope that you will go home a very different singer from the one who arrived.
